FDA and CDC Investigating Severe Illnesses Linked to Diamond Shruumz Edibles

Written by Will Long

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are currently investigating a multi-state outbreak of severe illnesses potentially associated with consuming Diamond Shruumz brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies. These edible products are marketed as containing a proprietary blend of mushroom extracts, which may include the potentially dangerous Amanita muscaria mushroom.

Outbreak Details

As of June 11, 2024, a total of 12 illnesses and 10 hospitalizations have been reported across eight states: Alabama (1), Arizona (4), Indiana (2), Kentucky (1), Missouri (1), Nevada (1), Pennsylvania (1), and South Carolina (1). The cause of the illnesses has not yet been determined, but investigators are looking into the possibility of harmful ingredients in the Diamond Shruumz products.

Reported Symptoms

Individuals who consumed these products reported a range of severe symptoms, including central nervous system depression with sedation, seizures, muscle rigidity, tremors, abnormal heart rate and blood pressure, gastrointestinal effects, skin flushing, excessive sweating, and metabolic acidosis. Several patients required intensive care due to the severity of their symptoms.

Dangers of Amanita Muscaria Consumption

Amanita muscaria, also known as the fly agaric or fly amanita, is a mushroom species known for its psychoactive properties. However, consuming this mushroom can be extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Amanita muscaria contains ibotenic acid and muscimol, which can cause a range of adverse effects, including:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Hallucinations and delusions
  • Seizures and convulsions
  • Coma and respiratory failure

The severity of these symptoms can vary depending on the amount consumed and individual sensitivity. Seeking immediate medical attention is crucial if someone has ingested Amanita muscaria or any product containing it.

FDA Recommendations

The FDA recommends that consumers, retailers, and healthcare providers not purchase, eat, sell, serve, or distribute any flavor of Diamond Shruumz brand products. The agency advises discarding any previously purchased items to prevent potential harm.

Risks of Consuming Edibles with Undisclosed Ingredients

Diamond Shruumz products are part of a growing trend of “edibles” claiming to provide health benefits or psychoactive effects through mushroom extracts or other compounds. However, such products may contain undisclosed, misformulated, or unapproved ingredients that can cause severe adverse reactions. Consumers should be cautious of any edible product claiming to have psychoactive properties, as they may pose significant health risks.
