Can I Go to Rehab With GEHA Insurance?

Written by Will Long

If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction and have health insurance through the Government Employees Health Association (GEHA), you may be wondering if your plan covers drug and alcohol rehab. The good news is, GEHA insurance does provide coverage for addiction treatment services, and JourneyPure At The River works with GEHA to ensure our clients are able to access the care they need to achieve long-term recovery.

What is GEHA Insurance?

GEHA is a not-for-profit provider of medical and dental plans for federal employees and retirees and their families. Established in 1937, GEHA is the second-largest national health plan serving federal employees, with over 2 million members worldwide.

GEHA offers several types of health plans, including:

  • High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
  • Standard Option
  • Elevate Plus Option
  • High Option

All plans meet the minimum essential coverage requirements of the Affordable Care Act and provide comprehensive coverage for medical care, prescription drugs, and preventive services. Many plans also include additional benefits like vision and wellness programs.

Benefits of GEHA Insurance

One of the biggest advantages of having GEHA insurance is the nationwide network of providers. With over 2.7 million in-network provider locations, including hospitals, primary care physicians, specialists, and urgent care centers, members can access care no matter where they live or travel.

Plans also offer competitive premiums, low copays and deductibles, and limits on out-of-pocket expenses. This helps make health care more affordable for federal employees. Additionally, GEHA is dedicated to promoting health and wellness for members, with many plans covering preventive care at 100%.

Enrolling

Federal employees can enroll in GEHA insurance during the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) open season each year, which typically runs from early November through early December. Employees have several options to enroll:

Current federal employees may also be able to enroll or change their coverage outside of open season if they experience a qualifying life event, such as marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child.

GEHA Coverage for Addiction Treatment

All GEHA medical plans provide coverage for professional mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Specific coverage varies by plan, but most cover inpatient and outpatient treatment, therapy, medication, and substance use disorder screenings.

For example, the Standard Option plan covers inpatient treatment at in-network facilities with prior approval at 15% of the plan allowance. This plan also covers outpatient treatment, including therapy and counseling, with a $30 copay per visit.
