For Kimberly “Kimmy” S., addiction was a three-decade journey that stripped away everything from material possessions to the sacred trust of family. Her path from recreational drug use to complete life transformation demonstrates that it’s never too late to reclaim what addiction has taken.
Starting in her early teens with recreational drug use, Kimmy watched as her life gradually spiraled out of control. “It progressively got worse over the years,” she shares. Despite multiple attempts at recovery through AA and NA, lasting change remained elusive. “It would work for a short period of time, but I’ve always written back out.”
The pattern became cyclical and increasingly destructive. “It went from one drug to another. I would get off one and sooner than later, I’ve replaced it with something else,” Kimmy recalls. “It got to the point that I was on something all day every day until I ended up in jail.”
The cost of her 30-plus years of addiction was staggering. “My using cost me many jobs, a few homes, including my parents’ house where I and my children were born and raised,” she shares. But perhaps most devastating was the loss of “the closeness and trust I always had with my family and most of all my three self.”
Repeated incarcerations added another layer of family trauma. “It landed me in jail on numerous occasions where my children were left to go through things they shouldn’t have ever had to go through without their mom,” Kimmy reflects, the pain still evident in her voice.
A New Beginning
