For Corbin, a journey that began with teenage experimentation spiraled into a battle that would cost him nearly everything. Corbin’s struggle with alcohol began in high school, driven by a desire to fit in. What started as an attempt to be “cool” quickly evolved into a destructive force in his life.
“I began my drinking career halfway through high school in an attempt to be a cool kid, to fit in, to be a part of,” Corbin recalls.
Little did he know that this seemingly innocent start would lead to a series of losses. As his addiction progressed, Corbin watched educational opportunities slip away, careers crumble, and his marriage dissolve. Perhaps most painfully, he lost custody of his child.
A New Beginning
In July 2019, Corbin took his first step towards recovery by seeking help at JourneyPure. However, like many individuals struggling with addiction, his path wasn’t straightforward. After completing the program, he believed he could manage on his own, armed with his newfound knowledge about addiction.
This overconfidence led to a setback. In January 2020, Corbin received his first DUI charge, a wake-up call that prompted him to seek long-term rehabilitation. Despite initial success and even becoming a staff member at a rehab facility, Corbin found himself relapsing four months later.
“I thought that that job alone would keep me sober,” he admits. “But sure enough, four months later, I was right back in the same boat.”
The Road to Recovery
It wasn’t until after a brief stint in jail and another round of treatment that Corbin finally embraced the fundamental truth of his recovery:
“I finally sat down and learned that I do not have this. And I cannot do this on my own.”
This realization marked a turning point in Corbin’s journey. He fully committed to working a program with a sponsor and connecting with other individuals in recovery. It was through this dedication and the support of the recovery community that Corbin began to experience true freedom from addiction.
Today, Corbin’s life has come full circle. He now works at JourneyPure, the very place where his successful recovery journey began in 2019. His experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ongoing support and active participation in recovery programs.
“I could not imagine a life better for myself than the one that God has given me,” Corbin shares. “I owe it all to him. And I think this program, the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, the program of Narcotics Anonymous for giving people like me hope.”
