Blake's Path to Recovery:
Embracing Spiritual Principles at JourneyPure
A Life in Crisis
Recovery from addiction is more than just abstaining from substances; it’s about transforming one’s entire approach to life. For Blake, whose journey began at JourneyPure, this transformation came through embracing spiritual principles and committing to a program of ongoing recovery.
Blake’s clean date of June 9, 2022, marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. His time at JourneyPure provided the crucial first steps in his recovery journey.
“JourneyPure really gave me time to sit down without the drugs and learn a few key things like changing my mindset around my way of life,” Blake reflects.
A New Beginning
However, Blake’s recovery didn’t end when he left treatment. It was through his involvement with Narcotics Anonymous (NA) that he deepened his understanding of recovery and began to internalize the spiritual principles that would become the foundation of his new life.
“I got into the program in Narcotics Anonymous to where I really started to learn about the step work, spiritual principles, which is the foundation of the way that I live my life,” Blake explains.
The process of embracing these spiritual principles wasn’t easy. It required Blake to confront and change deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behavior.
“It’s been my burden ever since I’ve started to learn about those things and live those things. Truly. To live the spiritual principles and not character defects that were written on my heart for so long,” he shares.
Blake’s experience highlights a crucial aspect of recovery: the importance of replacing destructive thought patterns and behaviors with positive, life-affirming principles. This process of transformation is at the heart of many recovery programs, including the one Blake encountered at JourneyPure and continued with NA.
For those who might struggle with the concept of spirituality in recovery, Blake offers a perspective born from his own experience:
“If you struggle with a God concept, just think of your addiction and the wickedness and the negative all around you and with some time clean, you’ll start to realize that you’re living a life of love and just positive things happen.”
The Road to Recovery
This shift from negativity to positivity, from destruction to creation, is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of recovery.
Blake’s advice for others on the recovery journey is both simple and profound:
“Just don’t pick it back up when it gets hard. Pray–do the right next thing. Do your service work. Get outside of yourself. Don’t get trapped in your own mind. Justice, love, acceptance and forgiveness. That’s it. That’s how we heal.”
These words encapsulate the essence of many recovery programs: staying committed even through difficulties, connecting with a higher power, taking positive actions, helping others, avoiding self-obsession, and practicing principles of compassion and forgiveness.
A Message of Hope
Blake’s story illustrates that recovery is an ongoing process of growth and transformation. It begins with the decision to seek help – a decision that led Blake to JourneyPure – but continues long after treatment ends. It’s a journey of continual learning, practice, and spiritual growth.
