At JourneyPure At The River, clients use Experiential Therapy to quickly get to the underlying issues of their addiction.

What Is Experiential Therapy?

Experiential Therapy is an umbrella term for a range of therapeutic interventions that go beyond traditional talk therapy and include equine therapy, music therapy, art therapy, songwriting therapy, adventure therapy, and more.

Developed in the 1970s, this therapeutic approach encourages patients to identify and address underlying issues on their own. Through participation in guided activities, clients defy obstacles, enhance self-esteem, and experience surprising success. The active nature of experiential therapy allows patients to let their guard down more easily than they would in more traditional individual or group therapy settings. Upon completion of an experiential therapy activity, a client has the opportunity to process the experience with a trained therapist. The therapist offers valuable feedback and a safe space for reflection and discussion.

One of the key components of Experiential Therapy is that it often bypasses the intellect. Most individuals with addiction have analyzed and scrutinized their patterns and behaviors yet still haven’t been able to create sustainable change. With Experiential Therapy, an individual is often in a situation in which they must respond quickly allowing unconscious patterns to emerge. Experiential therapies often reveal the true patterns and motivations rather than what an individual thinks they already know, therefore giving direct access to underlying issues which need healing.
