Kelsey's Journey:
Overcoming Trauma and Finding Hope at JourneyPure
A Life in Crisis
Kelsey’s journey to recovery is a powerful testament to resilience in the face of extraordinary adversity. At 29, with 48 days of sobriety, Kelsey’s story of overcoming trauma and addiction showcases the transformative impact of treatment at JourneyPure.
Kelsey’s path to addiction was paved with unimaginable hardships. Growing up in foster care from age 3 to 18, she experienced constant upheaval, living in “13 states, 67 foster homes and 34 school districts.” This instability laid the groundwork for future struggles.
“I bounced around about every five-and-a-half months,” Kelsey recounts, highlighting the lack of stability in her formative years.
Tragically, just two weeks after exiting foster care, Kelsey faced a horrific ordeal. “I was kidnapped and held hostage for four years, six months, 13 days,” she shares. During this time, she gave birth to her son on a couch and eventually escaped when he was six months old.
The trauma of her experiences and the heart-wrenching decision to place her son for adoption when he was a year old led Kelsey to seek solace in substances. “I turned to meth and alcohol to numb everything,” she explains.
A New Beginning
For nearly three years, Kelsey struggled with active addiction before a 16-month stint in county jail prompted her to seek sobriety. Her journey to recovery was complicated by legal obligations, including six years of state probation, a year of misdemeanor, a year of house arrest and 28 months in recovery court.
Kelsey’s path to sustained recovery has not been linear. After completing her legal obligations and spending three years in sober living, she experienced relapses. It was during these challenging times that Kelsey turned to JourneyPure for support.
The Road to Recovery
Now, after her second stay at JourneyPure, Kelsey is 48 days sober and looking towards a brighter future.
“I’m now 48 days sober, looking for jobs and doing great,” she shares, her voice filled with hope and determination.
Kelsey’s story is a powerful reminder of the complex interplay between trauma, addiction, and recovery. It underscores the importance of perseverance and the value of professional support in overcoming even the most challenging circumstances.
