Humana

Humana is one of the largest publicly traded health insurance companies in the U.S. Serving over nine million members, Humana offers group healthcare coverage, Medicare plans, individual health plans, and specialty benefits.

The Louisville, Kentucky-based company has a network of more than 65,000 psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and nurse practitioners.

Humana plans are accepted at drug rehabilitation programs, but the acceptability of insurance varies according to the individual, the plan, the treatment center, and the type of treatment. Your plan may cover only a portion of your treatment, so it’s important to check your insurance plan prior to enrollment in any program.

What does Humana cover?

Humana health insurance offers coverage and different plan options for mental health services, which can include substance abuse treatment. While Humana recently announced it would be exiting from state insurance exchanges created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the law does require a base level of mental health and substance abuse coverage, as required under guidelines outlined by the ACA. Again, specific coverage and copay requirements may depend on the individual policy and the state where the policyholder lives.

While Humana does cover many of the costs associated with treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, these services often require pre-authorization. Copays and coinsurance cost sharing may vary, depending on factors such as the plan a member has, their deductible, and the facility they’re attending.

Inpatient Addiction Treatment versus Outpatient

Depending on how serious the addiction is, the patient will need to decide whether an inpatient or outpatient treatment center is right for him or her.

Inpatient treatment, such as that provided by JourneyPure At The River, features residential accommodations, where patients live for 30, 60, or 90-day stays to focus on beating their addiction and any co-occurring mental health disorders. It is recommended for those with serious addictions or long-term mental health issues.

An outpatient facility only requires the patient to participate for a number of hours and allows them to leave. Outpatient treatment is suited for people with less serious, short-term addictions.

Verifying Coverage and Finding the Best, Most Appropriate Treatment

Studying up on insurance options can be overwhelming, especially if you or someone you know is suffering from addiction. Of course, knowledgeable advisors are available with Humana. They can verify your insurance coverage and find the best treatment for you. Call your insurance provider and ask an informed representative about the details of your individual plan.
